Rice exporters to visit Mozambique

A trade delegation of rice export will visit Mozambique next month to explore new export opportunities there and other surrounding African countries. While chairing fifth meeting of Federation Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Standing Committee on Rice Exports, Rafique Suleman Chairman Committee said the delegation aimed at capturing not only the market in Mozambique but the surrounding African countries as well including Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Zambia and even South Africa.The trade delegation would be comprised leading rice exporters to market the Pakistan Bastmati and Irri rice and expected to travel in the first week of September, he added. He requested FPCCI to support the delegation through Shaikh Khalid Tawab, Senior Vice President, FPCCI, who also holds the position of Honorary Consul General of Mozambique.Rafique assured that the delegation would go a long way in exploring new opportunities for rice exporters in Southeast African market. Furthermore, he suggested that there should be a trade delegation to Afghanistan to promote bilateral trade between the two countries.He informed the meeting that quantity of total rice exports for last year had increased from previous year as during the last fiscal year Pakistan had exported some 4.2 million metrictons with major exports of non-basmati rice. "Slight decline inthe export was due to tenders and auctions of the rice stock in Thailand as well as surplus of stock led to a reduction in prices of rice in Pakistan which eventually reduced the total value of export of rice as compare to last year," he added.Chairman committee said that to promote Pakistani commodities, government should grant wheat and flour as gifts and donations to other countries along with rice as well since they were already in a surplus. He also emphasised on the need of a proper banking channel with Iran to increase bilateral trade between both the countries. He hoped that visit to Mozambique would create new export opportunities for Pakistani Rice traders, besides earning more foreign exchange for the country.During the meeting Rafique appreciated efforts of Abdul Rahim Janoo, Chairman, FPCCI, Standing Committee on Fairs Exhibitions & Delegations on his commendable performance and extraordinary services to FPCCI as well as REAP. KP govt. to distribute 10 million olive plants

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Public Health Engineering (PHE), Shah Farman has said that six union councils of the Koh Daman, district Peshawar are suitable for the cultivation of olive plants, saying for this purpose, the provincial government will distribute 10 million olive plants in the growers of the concerned areas free of cost. The step, he said will increase the annual profit of these councils to Rs 400 million. Steps taken to adopt modern biotechnology

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan on Thursday said that Pakistan has taken a number of bold steps regarding resorting to biotechnology in spite of many challenges. Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan while speaking at a two-day workshop on capacity building of biosafety technology said that Pakistan as a developing country is facing many challenges including energy crisis, food security, and rapid urbanization in the wake of increasing population and the more global phenomenon of climate change.Despite all these challenges, Pakistan took many bold steps with respect to adoption of modern biotechnology and establishing Biotechnology Centres across the country, the minister said. The workshop was organised in collaboration with the Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) and Pakistan Biotechnology Information Centre (PABIC). The minister said that biotechnology has the potential to enhancethe food production by five to six percent which is a great sign for achieving food security. The real benefits of biotechnology would be attained by inculcating awareness about the practical application of biotechnology products among general public and farmers at large, he said.In Pakistan, he said, public accepted genetically modified crops at a large scale area (85pc) under Bt cotton cultivation while number of other crops and traits are in pipeline. He saidthat safer use of modern biotechnology for public welfare is one of the main agendas of incumbent government."Pakistan being a responsible member of world community, showed its strong commitment to international agreements in connection with safer handling of genetically modified crops such as CBD and Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety," he said. He said that comprehensive series of discussions and dialogues made it possible to develop and implement Pakistan Biosafety Rules in 2005 for the safer use of modern biotechnology. These biosafety guidelines and rules provide platform to avoid the adverse effects of Genetically Modified (GM) technology on health and environment, he added.Bosan admitted that the implementation of Biosafety Rules 2005 in the country is not very effective due to lack of Biosafety awareness among masses only at public level but also at national research and academic institutes. There is a strong need to set up a National Biosafety Laboratory in the country, he added.Professor Kausar Abdullah Malik, a renowned biotechnologistwhile speaking on the occasion said that the government needs to introduce an effective regularity mechanism on biotechnology. Research and commercialisation of Genetically Modified (GM) crops was badly affected in Pakistan following devolution of powers to the provinces after passage of 18th Amendment as there was absolute lack of official ownership of this important field, he said. Wheat export policy to benefit mills

The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s (FPCCI) Standing Committee on Flour Milling has called for a generalised wheat export policy, favouring not only the whole flour millers but also general consumers.The committee Chairman Dr Bilal Sufi, while addressing the meeting held here on Wednesday at FPCCI’s regional office, asked the government to freeze the wheat support price at current level of Rs1300 per 40 kg.“In fact, the wheat rate should be cut down to the level of international rates to improve the almost stagnant exports of the commodity,” he demanded.“The export is not possible until the local wheat prices are linked to that in the international market,” he noted.Besides, he said, Russian states and India had snatched the Afghan market from Pakistan, causing a glut of wheat here.“International wheat prices are very low and the rates still do not become feasible even after adding subsidy,” he said.He said there was no way in sight to dispose of last year’s wheat stocks.“We have been asking the government to reduce wheat prices so that consumers could benefit from cheap flour, but it doesn’t pay heed,” he said, and added, “Punjab government should cut down prices to boost provincial consumption.”Sufi said the government did not consider global trend while fixing procurement price at Rs1,350 per 40kg.“As demand for the flour is presently not much, so majority ofmills in Punjab are closed,” he addedHe further said that last January, the federal government set wheat export target at 1.2 million tonnes by offering transport rebate from $45-55 per ton.“Despite extending date for exports, the aim to facilitate the millers as well as to earn foreign exchange could not be materialized,” he lamented.He said that Punjab was allowed to export 800,000 tonnes at a transport rebate of $55 per ton, while Sindh was tasked with 400,000 tonnes with a rebate of $45.Quoting statistics, Sufi said that only 247 tonnes of wheat was exported during July-December 2015-16, fetching just$66,000.“The exports dropped to 10,441 tonnes, worth $3 million in 2014-15, from 20,037 tonnes of $7 million value in last fiscal year,” he informed.He said that the government would have to lower wheat prices to dispose of last year’s carry-over stock.“In the last export policy, restriction was placed that those possessing minimum 5,000 tonnes of wheat would be eligible to export, and thus only big exporters were able to export wheat, who misused the rebate facility,” he recalled.“A small quantity of surplus wheat could be exported by the private sector despite attractive rebate on export,” he suggested.“Wheat continues to be purchased from the food departmentand sold in the local market whereas rebate is applied on fake documents,” Sufi elaborated.He said this practice not only caused damage to wheat export but also reduced 95 percent of flour mills, which were unable to purchase costly wheat, to a scrap.News SourceNews Collated byPAKISSAN.comCourtesy www.nation.com.pk

Recently beat down bypoor earnings, Twitter (TWTR) has become more attractive to potential suitors - but who fits the bill best? In my opinion Microsoft (MSFT) stands out as the verybest fit.Why?It's simple, having justacquired LinkedIn (which will hopefully soon be integrated in the ubiquitous Office suite), Twitter would give the software giant a powerful social network component to round out Office.Twitter claims to haveover 300 million active users every month. However, its total reach is said to approach 800 million people. This, of course includes tweets that appear outside of Twitter - such as those on the bottom of reality TV shows, news and sporting events, etc. etc.Unfortunately, Twitter reported recently that the number of current quarter users increased only 1% over the prior quarter. Needless to say, that did not help its case with investors.To counter this apparent stagnation ingrowth, Twitter has recently created a newclient app by the name of Nuzzel. This new app shows traditional Twitter users which links are sent out the most withthose that a user follows.Additionally, a new moments tab was added to bring even more relevant content directly to users.Yet, one of the biggestproblems facing usersis still how to find the vast volume of content that Twitter continues to accumulate. For example, how can a student doing research, or a professional looking for information on a specific topic search through Twitter to gain access quickly?But, what if Twitter were acquired by Microsoft and integrated into the Office suite?Now, just imagine, having the social network power of tweeting directly from Outlook.
